Sustainability in Film and TV Production, from the University of Málaga

On May 14th, our Sustainability Director, Esmeralda Ruiz, joined Belén Carrasco from the Málaga Film Officefor a professional guest session at the University of Málaga, within the Master’s in Audiovisual Creation and Performing Arts at the Faculty of Communication Sciences.

The Goal: Greener Productions That Support the SDGs

The session focused on how to integrate sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into audiovisual and performing arts productions. From pre-production to post, sustainable practices can reduce environmental impact and increase social responsibility.

🛠️ Practical Tools and Strategies Shared:

  • ✅ Sustainable filming certifications: How to obtain them and why they matter
  • ✅ Support from Film Offices: What resources and incentives are available
  • ✅ Local purchasing: Reducing transport emissions and supporting local economies
  • ✅ Rent instead of buy: Minimizing waste and material consumption
  • ✅ Donating leftover materials: Promoting circular economy practices
  • ✅ Smart planning: Creating and following a sustainability plan for each production

💡 Key Takeaway: People Drive the Change

Beyond tools and checklists, team motivation and involvement were highlighted as essential for real transformation. A committed crew that embraces sustainability from day one can make a real difference in reducing a production’s footprint.

✅ Why This Matter

With growing pressure on the audiovisual industry to meet environmental standards and social expectations, embracing sustainable production is no longer optional—it’s a competitive advantage. Events like this at universities are vital to equip the next generation of creators with the mindset and tools to produce responsibly.
